Shortage of lithium oral solution

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of lithium in solution for oral intake. Besides being very inexpensive, lithium has an established track record for reducing the risk of suicide during the cycle of manic euphoria and depression known as bipolar disorder. The effective dose of lithium is only slightly less than the toxic dose, and serum levels must be monitored. This is complicated by the fact that more lithium can be tolerated during the manic phase and then must be reduced after mood stabilization in about a month.

Historical note: Lithium was originally part of the formula for 7-Up.
