Shortage of thiothixene capsules

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of thiothixene capsules. This drug is one of the first generation antipsychotics, often called typical antipsychotics. It is used to treat schizophrenia when other treatments have been unsuccessful. It is sometimes used to calm severely agitated people. If used to treat elderly people with mental problems associated with dementia, it will increase mortality, particularly heart failure and pneumonia.
