The American System of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of scopolamine transdermal patches. The minute amount of the drug in transdermal patches is useful for motion sickness and nausea after general anesthesia. Larger amounts cause delirium, hallucinations and death. It is one of the toxic compounds in Jimsonweed (Datura stramonium), which is one of several plants (Oxytropis and Astralagus spp.) called locoweed because of their effects on livestock.
