The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of injectable hydroxyzine. Hydroxyzine is a first generation antihistamine which also has sedative and antiemetic properties. When injected with some opioid analgesics, it increases their effectiveness as painkillers. It may also be used prior to anesthesia.
