Shortage of injectable enalaprilat

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of injectable enalaprilat. This drug shortage is yet another that arises from the voluntary closure of Ben Venue's manufacturing facility, where injectable enalaprilat was produced under contract for Bedford Laboratories. There is no mention of why Hospira's product is in short supply. This drug will injure and possibly kill a developing fetus. When medication cannot be taken by mouth, this is an injectable option for control of high blood pressure. It is an angiotension I-converting-enzyme inhibitor (ACEI).

Shortage of injectable methyldopate

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of injectable methyldopate. The explanation for this drug shortage lies in part in the voluntary recall of one lot of this product by the only maker, American Reagent. This drug is important for lowering high blood pressure in the short term before switching to an oral medication.

Shortage of Calcium Acetate Capsules

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of calcium acetate capsules. This is a very important medication for people who have had poorly controlled high blood pressure or diabetes for a couple of decades and whose kidneys as a result are barely functioning. When the kidneys aren't working well, phosphorus builds up in the blood and these capsules help prevent the phosphorus in food from being absorbed in the gut.
