Shortage of nefazodone tablets

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of nefazodone tablets. Teva did not provide a reason for this drug shortage. My guess is that this drug is going to be discontinued because of poor sales. The drug was discontinued in some countries because it rarely causes hepatotoxicity to the point where a liver transplant is required. There are also many drugs that interact with nefazodone to the detriment of the patient. That said, it is rather unique in that it is an antidepressant which inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine and has a low incidence of negative effects on libido. In general, the drug is not a first or even second choice among the many antidepressants now available.

I have taken Nefazadone for about 10-12 years and can say it is the only antidepressant that worked well for me. The risks have been well explained and I accept them. I truly hope Teva does not decide to discontinue the medication as this will create a quality of life issue for me. I have tried at least 4 other "similar" medications and know my options. Shame on other countries for limiting distribution. Most choices in life come with risks and people should be free to decide for themselves if the risks are well explained. My fingers are crossed this is only a manufacturing hiccup.

I too have taken Nefazodone for 12 years and it is the only medication that has worked for me. I have contacted Teva and they said it was not being discontinued and if so they would say so. At this time, there is a release date of 4+ weeks from May 2012. FDA also reports a release date and would hopefully know if it was being discontinued. Keep up the hope!

I,too, have been taking Nefazodone 550 mg for 16 years with no bad side effects. It has been a life saver for me because I'm not able to take the SSRI's or some of the other antidepressants. The quality of my life has been very good with this drug. I pray that they don't discontiue it!

I've been taking Nefazadone 300 mg /day for about 10 years and was unable to get my Rx refilled last week due to the shortage and have been "cold turkey" for about 1 week now. Horrible withdrawal for me. Primary Care Physician gave me Viibryd as a replacement but I'm suffering, miserable, and can't really go to work. Just called Teva this morning and they said the product is back in the supply chain and should be in Pharmacies any day now. Teva said no plans to discontinue the drug. Had problem with 3rd party ingredient supplier.

I notice that 100, 150, and 200 mg tablets are now available, while 50 and 250 mg tablets are still backordered. Has this partial resupply met your various needs?

I've taken Nafazodone 400 mg. daily for 20 years, it's literally been a life saver for me. However when it became unavailable in my area 6 weeks ago I was switched to Viibyrd. All hell broke loose as I had 20 seizures during that time period! Thankfully Nafazodone is back in stock here again and due to what happened my pharmacy ordered enough to last me 6 months!
