Shortage of amyl nitrite inhalation solution

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists reports a shortage of amyl nitrite inhalation solution. Inhaled amyl nitrite relaxes the body's smooth muscles within seconds. The "rush" from abusing "poppers" arises from the increased blood flow as all the arteries in the body dilate. This same effect will also relieve angina by allowing the heart muscle to take up oxygen more efficiently. The standard treatment kit for cyanide poisoning contains amyl nitrite for inhalation and sodium nitrite and sodium thiosulfate for intravenous injection.
