Shortage of injectable levofloxacin

The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists today reported a shortage of injectable levofloxacin. This is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic which is used for serious and life-threatening infections. The various anthrax scares have brought up the fact that another fluoroquinolone, ciprofloxacin, is the drug of choice for prophylaxis in event of an imminent attack with weaponized anthrax spores. If prevention fails, however, injectable levofloxacin is a drug that might save your life after the spores have established an infection in your lungs.
